Gundam Giant Mecha 1:1

Posted in Places, Stuff by tokyobling on June 24, 2009

So forgive me. I am a little kid when it comes to these things. Last weekend I had the chance to go to Odaiba, an artificial island smack bang in the middle of Tokyo bay where some really smart people have decided to raise a temporary statue in honor of the epic Japanese anime, Gundam. These robots are common in most Japanese households, in the form of toys or plastic models in the scale of 1:64 or 1:177, but this model is 1:1, life size, real and moving, belching smoke. It will come in really handy if or rather when, Godzilla, decides to attack Tokyo. Forgive me for the deluge of photos, but I want to show you the best of approximately 1000 shots snapped over a two hour period! Contact me personally if you are interested in getting high res. files. If you are in Tokyo this summer, you must go.

    Excellent photos & fantastic Gundam.
In Catalonia Spain, you can find a Mazinger Z 1:1
    But your Gundam is better.
    Enjoy ; )

Thanks! I have never seen this before! Actually, I haven’t been in Catalonia since 1986 so it’s time to head over again soon. Now I know where to go. Great location too, in the middle of a forest?!

Looks like to lighting conditions were difficult to work with. Nevertheless great pictures with that light!

I love the Japanese for undertaking this type of projects. Somehow I think it must be the pinnacle of their sense of relativation or just the opposite. Simply amazing.

    • tokyobling said, on June 27, 2009 at 5:02 am

Thanks! Well, the lighting conditions were actually perfect. With straight on normal light it would have looked like what it is, just a big old toy on a field. I agree there is something special with Japanese that allows them to do this sort of thing. The fact that it is privately done and privately financed for the good of everyone just shows another aspect of Japanese people that I enjoy and makes me stay in this country. Sure, there are better things to with money, but sometimes, we need stuff like this too!

Hi, I know you’ve probably gotten a lot of these requests. But I was wondering If I could get some of the high resolution pictures that you have of the Gundam. I’ve seen many pictures of it, and have gotten a bunch, but the ones that you have are a lot better than the ones that I’ve accumulated. Thank you very much in advance, I hope that I can get some. I’d greatly appreciate it.
