There’s this really old run down area on the Northern part of the Yamanote line called Ameya Yokocho and a few nights ago I took a few minutes to walk from Ueno station to Okachimachi station and took these pictures. This shopping street nestled under the tracks of the Yamanote line (Tokoy’s central train commuter line) is hugely popular with locals and tourists alike and there really is no cheaper place to do your shopping in Japan. I come here a few times a year to stock up and it’s really fun walking around listening to the hoarse voices of the fishmongers. It gets really crowded around New Year where you can hardly walk 10 meters in 10 minutes. The street stalls must pull in a lot of money because one place where I recently bought new gloves told me their rent was 1.5 MILLION yen per MONTH. Ouch. Enjoy!
