The Cutest Cotton Squids

Posted in Stuff by tokyobling on October 23, 2010

While walking through Tokyo’s Aoyama district the other day I saw these cotton squids hung up to dry inside a small family style restaurant. What a great design and fun idea! I especially love their little eyes. Now, who will make a whole family of these to hang in their windows? Sock puppet squids!

they are indeed the cutest sock puppet squids! :) when I was in Kyoto, I saw a lot of stuffed dolls/toys by the doorway of houses and shops. if you have time, check one of the photos at http://slouchingsomewhere.wordpress.com/2010/09/02/kyoto-day-7-in-its-kitchen-alleys-and-castle-and-another-temple/
never found out if it meant anything though. or if it was just the japanese being awesome and cute. hehe.

Lovely photos as always! Thanks! About the doll in your photo, I think it is meant to be a frog, and as we all know, frog in Japanese is “kaeru” or カエル, which happens to be the same as come back, return, 帰る. So a lot of Japanese stores, cities, temples, stations have some sort of frog symbol near their exit to welcome visitors back. I think I wrote about this here. But of course, they are also being cute and awesome. (^-^)
