White Wedding

Posted in Japanese Traditions, People, Places by tokyobling on November 28, 2010

I know, it’s cheating, but if there is one place you are always guaranteed of getting something interesting to shoot, it’s at Tokyo’s central Meiji Jingu, or the Meiji Shrine. I saw this wonderfully happy looking couple, both in very traditional Japanese wedding costumes. Don’t you just love the smile on his face? He is one happy married man!

Now that is the most beautiful thing, no matter the clothes or places but those smiles worth it all:)especially since their eyes are smiling too!

They sure look wonderful! It was fun seeing how aware they were of all the tourists their takign their photos while posing like this. You can’t tell from this photo, but the portal where they are standing is one of the main exists for visitors to the shrine and quite a crowd built up waiting for the little photo session to end. I am sure I got a better photo than the photographer though. I love this angle!

He doesn’t believe he is a lucky man, he KNOWS it — that’s what his face is declaring to the world. Don’t you just love it?

I do! It’s good to see that slightly older couples are so upbeat about their marriages as well! Most couple who marry in public shrines like this are much younger…!

ah.. I just love traditional weddings.. and this one is no exception.

I’m very curious about the brides hair. – I once saw a wedding like this (on movie) and the bride had one of the pretties hairdesign.
I bet this bride is no exception. Behind the white ‘hat’, a beautiful hairdesign is hidden.

They have some fantastic hair set ups underneath these white hoods. But 99% of them these days are wigs, and the wig makers in Japan are unbelievably skilled! I once talked to a master wig maker and he told me he has a long waiting list of people who want to apprentice with him, but he only takes on two apprentices at a time and it takes many many years of tutoring for them to even become licensed wig makers. Unbelievable!

a wig? – I never thougt about it. But now that you mention it, it make sense.
You really need long and a big volume of hair to be able to make those hair set ups. Not many women have it (anymore :D )

Wig master.. I never knew they exsist.
Promise me, if you ever get the chance to take a few photos of him(or any other craftman) you must show us
I love to see the traditional way of creating thing and I know your photos will do them justice too.

I do wish I could get more opportunities to meet real crafts people, but it is hard to get in touch with them and even harder to get permission to photograph… I’ll do my best!
