Walking Performance Art
I had heard about a strange, steampunkish birdman walking performance art act a few months ago but hadn’t been able to catch a performance until today, in Shinjuku. I was walking up the stairs from the JR Head Office building and basically found myself being charged by this exotic and amazing beast half man, half bird, leather, brass, steam and metal. The best part about this absolutely surreal vision was all the people who just didn’t notice him, or pretended not to notice him! It was hilarious to watch him strike a pose in a shadow, wait a few moments and then stalk off almost enveloping a pram or young couple in his wings. What a power trip! I also got to see him chase kids around, annoy business men and play tag with a bunch of school girls. The artist call his act “nani-sole”, but I know nothing more than this and that the suit is home made. Nani-sole is of course a play on words, nanisore, or “What’s that?!”.
This is the kind of performance art I can never get enough of! Doesn’t the beak remind you of the old European plague doctors, and his stilts like the landstriders from the movie Dark Crystal? I also shot some video, but let me warn you before hand, the video sucks. It’s a pain to watch, so don’t bother unless you are really interested in this performance.

Ahhhhhhh I would be so afraid… I have a phobia of extremely long things…. T.T
Haha… you should have seen the little kids running screaming! (^-^;)
It’s a very un-Japanese like performance! I see some people do take notice of the creature. ^^
Yes indeed! Most people noticed him, a few people stopped and watched and a few people just totally ignored it… how can you just walk past something like this? haha…
Intimidating but beautiful. Dude obviously has some skills in designing his outfit.
You’re video is not bad at all. In it we can see some of the action as he really gets into his role. But the light and tone in those photos look great.
And the references you mentioned were pretty spot on.
Thanks for the kind words! Personally I can’t stand the video. Yes, the guy is great and his costume is just getting better. It improves every time he puts on a performance, I found older photos of him online. (^-^)
I fell for this post, I watched the video too, I loved that as well! I’m already a fan of the steampunkish things, so the clothes were the first to catch my eyes. I also like how he is able to walk around for so long! It must need concetration not fell over and keep those long wings too!
By the way, if I ever meet him, I will make sure to ask him whether he wants some seeds to eat
I think he would be very happy! I think he’s vegetarian, since he didn’t even nibble on all the tasty looking kids! haha… Thanks for the kind comment Timi!
That is just so, so amazingly cool. Hieronymus Bosch meets The Last Exile. If only it could take flight!
Isn’t it? Yes, very Bosch! I missed that connection at first! Imagine if you could get a whole team of them and stalk down Wall Street? Maybe an idea for E? (^-^)
Wow that is so amazing. I think it would scare little kiddies though. And to be honest even as an adult it may spoke me a bit too. I can’t put my finger on why though.
It did send some grown up men running for cover actually! And some babies were screaming by just seeing it at a distance! It was great fun to watch the reaction of people! He stepped over me at one point but I was too busy fiddling with my camera to notice. Embarrassing… (^-^;)

This makes me want to camp out in front of the Krispy Kreme until I see this guy!
Haha… until a few years ago there were people almost camped out in front of Krispy Kreme daily, and about 15 years ago there were people camped out there for months on end. Different reasons though! (^-^)
That is totally awesome.
I really love this kind of performance art.
Thanks David and long time no see! (^-^)/
Actually I hadn’t gone anywhere, I was just being quiet.
Cheers.
Silence is golden! I have been following your transformation to a full-fledged Parisian as well! (^-^)
