Happy 3 Years of Blogging!

Posted in Animals, Places by tokyobling on November 15, 2011

Wow, I did it! Happy 3 years of nonstop blogging to me! Today it’s been three years since I started this little blog. Now, almost 1000 posts later, Over 1 260 000 visitors and over 7600 comments, I really can’t believe it is still going on. It’s fun to look back at the first few posts I made in 2008 and to realize that it feels like only yesterday I wrote them. I started this blog as an experiment, it was my first foray into blogging since when I started an illustration blog in 1997. Back in those days there wasn’t an fancy blog engines like this wonderful WordPress, so I had to hand code comments that were sent to me by email, back in those days it was still unusual and I remember that some people asked my why on Earth I wanted to publish emails that strangers would send me? I don’t think that the term blog was even invented. I stopped that blog after a couple of years, moved to Japan and built a new life here in this wonderful city of Tokyo. But I was frustrated reading foreigners blogs about Japan, newspapers and media sites would almost invariably focus on what was weird, strange and different about Japan. I was tired of reading glossy free papers with ads for restaurants and pubs (if I wanted to party or hang out in smoke filled cellars shouting at strangers I could have stayed in Europe). I was tired of people all over the world miss-understanding Japan and always pointing fingers “at those crazy Japanese”. While Japanese still thought of themselves as being the country of Geisha, Sushi, Samurai, Mount Fuji and Home Electronics, the rest of the world seemed to have a totally different view of Japan. So I decided to start blogging about Tokyo, and explain the city and the country, piece by piece, a picture at a time. It was difficult to find the right balance and set the tone of the blog in the beginning and it is a work that requires constant retuning and calibration, but I think I’m getting there. One of my inspirations was the site “The Big Picture” at the American newspaper the Boston Globe, which was started by a web developer (Alan Taylor) back in 2008 who saw the potential in huge, glorious, colorful photographs! Not at all like the images published in the paper or online, often only one image per article, small and obscured by text and graphics. No, I saw what the Boston Globe did and I thought I could do the same for Tokyo! Large images, no watermarks or text or silly “Photography by Someone @ Photography.com” text to ruin the picture. I also wouldn’t take any stories from online sources. If someone already did it, what is the point of repeating yourself online? Certainly not everything I post is original, but it is all from real life, using only subjects and things that I run into in real life. I don’t source anything online, I don’t ask anyone for inspiration, I don’t look anything up only to blog about it. In short, I blog about the things I run into as a quite typical lover of Japan and all things Japanese.

But there was one more thing I didn’t want to do, that most other blogs are doing: making fun of something, or ridiculing something. I would only blog about things that I encountered that were positive, fun, over the top, interesting or educational. My main goal was not to fall into the trap of so many other sites or media reporting about Japan: “look at those weird Japanese”. And I think it works. I think that the comments I get to the blog are more respectful, fun, learned, insightful and positive than many other media sites out there. There’s very little negativity here, and that is the way I like it! Tokyobling is about all the good, interesting or at least picture worthy things anyone could discover for themselves here in Japan, if they just took the time to open their eyes and hit the pavement.

I got slightly tired of blogging a month or so after the big earthquake, but that was probably just stress from all things going on and I was back on track after a bit of refocusing myself. Recently I have started posting twice a day, to be able to post stuff that I normally wouldn’t because I didn’t waste my “big post of the day” on something too minor or uninteresting.

It’s been three years. Let’s hope that I can keep doing it for another three years! At least!

I end this rather egotistical and self centered post with two of the nicest people I have ever met. Hiroshi, and his human buddy Yasushi, taking a bow for the audience after their show on a street corner in Tokyo’s Aoyama district. Imagine me doing something like that, for you my audience, and then imagine me getting a monkey’s foot on my head. That is Tokyobling, dancing in a very small circle (Tokyo apartments are small), to celebrate three years of blogging. Enjoy!

Grattis! You are indeed doing a great service to Japan by showing so many interesting and amazing things in Japan that even many Japanese aren’t aware of. I’m re-learning the culture and the history of my own country by reading your blog. I won’t be surprised if the number of visitors to Japan has increased because of your blog. You even make me want to go back for a visit soon. I’m also impressed that you blog daily and the fact that you can find such interesting stuff, not to mention your superb photos. Best wishes and I look forward to reading more. (The monkey IS so cute! He looks so smug footing his master’s head!)

Thank you so much for your kind words and support Emma! I don’t think I would keep it up if it weren’t for readers like you. I hope my blog will help people understand the real Japan and perhaps inspire one or two people to actually come and see for themselves! (^-^)

Congrats! Really really…! I love your blog, and your amazing work. I was searching to understand better this far away country, and you helped me a lot. It’s true: japanese point of view may be difficult to understand for non-japanese people and non-japanese usually simply make fun of it (I mean it’s impossible for a whole country to be marked just as crazy or whatever). But I wonder if you ever felt incapable to understand everything with its shadows. I mean: usually when you are far away from home you start to realize where you came from, and Japan is really distant. Again: thank you for your words and lovely pictures! All the best for this blog!

Thank you for the kind words Marika! I don’t think I’ll ever understand Japan, but I hope to one day stop misunderstanding the country! (^-^;) At least… thanks for your support, I hope to see you at the next birthday party! (^-^)/

Congrats! You’ve done an amazing job, I love your blog, which, if you knew me personally, you would find a bit weird. I’m not the greatest fan of “positivity only” or “negativity only”, I love life for what it is – moments of love and beauty and moments of sadness, sarcasm and negativity. But, your personal positive attitude made anyone who would want to bring negativeness to the table, a bit uncomfortable. So, people just follow your vibe. And respond to it, of course. I can’t always identify with it, but in those cases, I simply say nothing. In most cases, though, I get it, I like it and, often, I admire it.
I love Japan, I miss it almost every day, but I had quite a list of things I didn’t like about it. You, however, bring just happy, stylish, cute, admirable things. And I have a deep respect and appreciation for it. So, thank you for this wonderful blog, for your wonderful photographs, for your kindness with which you always reply to all posts, and, certainly, for a wonderful heart (and eye) that created this blog. Happy anniversary! xxx

Thank you for your kindness Irina! I totally agree. No country is perfect, and no country is without it’s problems and dark sides, but in order to balance it all out I decided to take a positive approach in this blog. This is also why I never bother reading news media about Japan or why I avoid most blogs about the country. I think the whole world would benefit if we focused on the positive things! That would leave us time and energy to fix the bigger problems that needs fixing. I wish more people could blog like this actually. I would love to see Krakowbling, Georgiabling, Budapestbling or Manillabling! (^-^)

I love you work and this site. Tokyobling is a breath of fresh air in an online world that sometimes veers toward the negative.

The fact that your photos are so large and without watermark or ego is one of the draws for me, as is your choice of diverse and interesting subject matter. Thank you, and Happy Birthday, Tokyobling !

Thank you Kit and thank you for picking up the exact things I have been working so hard on! (^-^) I’ll enjoy that cake! (^O^)/

It’s wonderful to see how you have developed your blog to what it is now and I really enjoyed reading how it all started. If I found you earlier I would have subscribed to you ages ago, but now that I have, I can do so and look forward to many more years of your Tokyo blogging.

The insight you give is something not everyone will be able to come across or even know about, and it’s great how you highlight them and give the positive views it always deserves.

    • tokyobling said, on November 16, 2011 at 1:02 am

Good morning Sabine and thank you for your kind comment! Better late than never right? I’m really looking forward to having you as a reader! (^-^)/

  12. Coal said, on November 16, 2011 at 1:20 am

Wow, three years already?! (I guess I say that because I only discovered your blog recently through a mutual love of all things Awa…) Congratulations!

Let me just chime in with everybody else and say have much I appreciate your policy towards presenting Japan as you find it. It makes me think back to when I made the decision to naturalise. I’d always loved Japan, but despite this there were many things I wasn’t happy with, many things I’d like to see change etc. When I put in the application for citizenship, I had to really go through a mental transformation of accepting that Japan is the way that it is, and that I must be at peace with it on those terms. That attitude has served me well, and I see that reflected in your postings.

    • tokyobling said, on November 16, 2011 at 2:29 am

Thanks Coal! I absolutely understand what you are talking about. But whenever bureaucracy hits me I try to remember that if the Japanese can handle it – and they do, 24/7 their entire lives – then I should be able to as well. (^-^) So far so good! I appreciate your support and friendship! (^O^)/

  18. D... said, on November 16, 2011 at 8:08 am

Yay!!!! Happy Three Year Anniversary (popping cork)!!!! I know I’m pretty new to the blog, but I think it’s fantastic. I love your recap, not at all egotistical, I think that your words ring true. There is enough negativity in the world, and we all experience it one some level or another (at least I know I do), but I love the world that you’ve created, it has wonderful positive energy. Great place to visit :D

You know what, every culture has some bizarre aspects to it, but that doesn’t embody the people as a whole. I sort of feel that if people chuckle, but not in a mean spirited way, more like how fun (maybe even silly) sort of way then that’s not so bad. But then we have to chuckle about our own silliness too. Aw well, at least that is how I see it, that it’s best of people don’t take themselves too seriously. Laughs are good for the soul.

    • tokyobling said, on November 17, 2011 at 12:42 am

Haha… thanks! You might be new but you’re on the top six commentators list! (top six? go figure!) My resolution for the coming year is to even less about ME and more positive! And… if possible, take myself less seriously (^-^;)

      • D... said, on November 17, 2011 at 1:08 am

Wow, top six!!!! I think the onigiri conversation may have been the clincher. But I think your identity is part of the blog, it adds a nice perspective when you read the text accompanying the picture. I love the idea of more positivity (although it’s pretty positive already). Life is always less stressful when you take yourself less seriously.

        • tokyobling said, on November 17, 2011 at 2:03 am

Thank you! It is an ongoing project of mine though, to leave a smaller footprint in the world. Both on the blog and ecologically! (^-^)

  19. kaori said, on November 16, 2011 at 9:25 am

Congratulations and otsukaresama! I’m a Japanese living abroad and I love what you are doing here. Every time I visit I feel like I get a genuine, authentic glimpse of my home. And the photography is amazing! I’ve also discovered places and events I never knew about and would love to try once I am back there. I also really appreciate the posts you did after the earthquake, I think I found you through Freshly Pressed. I imagine those posts were hard to write and blogging in general was difficult to do.

Thank you for all the work you put in to your blog, and I sincerely hope you continue! :)

    • tokyobling said, on November 17, 2011 at 12:37 am

Thank you Kaori! I have read a few of your posts and they are really captivating! You are a good writer and it is so interesting to hear a Japanese perspective on Israel. I have never been there but would love to go, your pictures look so good! And, I love Halva! Your blog is now on my list of top three expat blogs! (^-^)/ Keep coming back!

Congratulations!! It’s amazing you stayed at this for a whole three years! Amazing you have non-stop pics and information about such so very interesting things! I love your blog and look forward to the new posts every day! It’s in my routine internet check for the day- i check facebook, email, listen to the news, then read your blog. I just want to say total “Amen!” to all you just said above! You are wonderful! You are wonderful to want to capture and display all the beauty and interesting things of Japan in such positive light! I am so grateful for this you are doing for my place of origin that I love so much. I just can’t stand and it makes me get so irritated when I hear people badmouth things in Japan for no good reason at all- perhaps just cause those people just like finding things to diss to lift their egos or they can’t understand and accept anything slightly different from their culture they consider to be “right” and anything else different to be wrong and weird. Keep up the wonderful, fantastic work!!!!

    • tokyobling said, on November 17, 2011 at 12:24 am

Wow, I guess I’m a bit late – but better late than never, right? Unfortunately I can’t make it to your blog every single day, but let me assure: you I’m reading every single one of them. And I love them!

Hence, congratulations for your 3rd anniversary! A big achievement. Both this awesome project itself and the fact that you managed to keep it running for such a long time. Also, I regard every single one of your posts as a big achievement. You manage to present new, interesting, astonishing, let alone pretty aspects of this amazing country (which I’m proud to call my home, too) every single time.

Unfortunately I stumbled across your blog only recently (well, several months ago, to be honest), but you never fail to present things, places and (last but not least) festivals I never went to or had heard of before, but obviously start craving to do so after reading your insightful descriptions. Can you believe it: I’ve never seen Awaodori dancers myself?! I know, there’s no excuse… But thanks to your narrations I feel like I’ve been there.

Thank you so so much for everything you do, and please keep up the good work! Lots of people around the world (including me) would appreciate it very much.

Congratulations on your 3rd Blogiversary! (I am looking forward to the next three…or more…)

Your blog…well, it’s a pleasure, a real treasure. So happy to have stumbled on it.

(Just finished reading _A Boy Called H_ so thanks for that recommendation.)

    • tokyobling said, on November 18, 2011 at 12:12 am

Hahaha… yes I was worried there a little! But great things are afoot in the glorious state of Michigan and I figured you were busy on the home front! (^-^) Glad to hear you read the book I recommended, that book should be a text book in ALL Japanese culture, history and language classes. The original Japanese is so easy even dumb foreigners like me can read it in the original!

Thanks for the kind comment pk1154!
