The Imperial Palace in Snow

Posted in Nature, Places by tokyobling on January 25, 2012

Yesterday I woke up to see even central Tokyo covered in snow! Snow like this doesn’t happen very often in the capital and it is usually all gone by noon. I went to the most photogenic place I could imagine, the Imperial Palace area to see what it would look like. Here’s a few pictures from yesterday morning. It’s the first snow photography I have done in more than a decade and it shows! I really need more practice with this subject.

As I was snapping away and stumbling around the palace grounds (it was really slippery) more and more tourists arrived to take pictures of this rare scene. Even a few News crews were unpacking their camera gear and in the afternoon most newspapers had a photo like this, of the palace in snow. Once in a life time, maybe?

I can’t help but think how it looked back in feudal times :)

Different times alright :) is that a security guard patrolling the area?

Yes, there’s a few of them protecting the outer palace grounds.

Must be neat being so close to history :)

I heard about the snow in Tokyo. (It’s super warm in Oklahoma!) Gorgeous photos! – the contrast of white, blue and the palace!

Thank you Emma! The snow is all gone by now though. (^-^;)

Oh how etherial it looks. Like an enchanted palace that has been dusted with snow. So beautiful.

    • tokyobling said, on January 26, 2012 at 12:27 am

Thanks D! Yes, I was so lucky to be able to go there and see it for myself. I must have spent an hour just walking around the grounds! More photos to come… (^-^)

The place looks so stunning, with the snow and the palace… especially love the first photo. Snow looks fantastic in photos–just hate the cold that comes with it :)

    • tokyobling said, on January 26, 2012 at 12:28 am

Thank you! The cold is a little tricky, but it is alright as long as you dress properly. A lot of people still dress like it is early autumn though. Women in skirts and men without coats! (^-^;)

These photos are absolutely beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing!

I just found your blog yesterday and am now following it. It is one of my greatest dreams to visit Japan one day (and hopefully more than once), but it hasn’t happened yet. So for now I’ll live vicariously through your beautiful photography!

It is totally amazing! I remember the year it snowed when I was there. They closed the school down. It was so cool but that was maybe the second time in my life I’d ever seen snow.

Very stunning really maybe a once in a life time kind of moment!

    • tokyobling said, on January 26, 2012 at 12:36 am

Thank you! How happy the kids must have been and how upset the parents must have been… haha… Only second time to see snow?! Well, I’d actually trade my snow for your desert, anytime! (^-^;)

Strangely, I’ve never been to the Palace. I wanna go this next time~ >_<

    • tokyobling said, on January 28, 2012 at 2:38 am

It’s actually not that much to see… (^-^;) I think I’ve posted all of it at some time, except the outer gardens where the old Shogun’s castle remains are. But that will be the subject for a post this spring!
