Snowy Tokyo Palace
Here’s the last of the photos I took on Tokyo’s one and only proper day of snow this winter! It’s been getting warmer during the last week and I for one is not sorry to see this winter go. It’s been unusually dark and cold. On this beautiful morning though, I got up early and took time off from work to go see the Imperial Palace grounds covered in snow. It didn’t last long and most of the snow was gone after a day or two, but it was gorgeous while it lasted. I saw quite a few TV news crews and many other photographers much more well prepared than me. Having gotten enough of snow in my childhood I am not one of the ski enthusiast you see every night in Tokyo, lining up for the sleeper busses to the mountains in Nagano and Niigata. I’d much rather make my escape somewhere sunny and warm. But every now and then, snow really is beautiful!

I have not seen snow in forever. I kind of miss it, at least what I can remember of it.
Although, it would be fun to say, “I’ll be over at the palace skiing.” Just once in your life, or as some random thing to say.
Haha… that is a such a great oneliner! I wish I could be able to say it someday… well in Europe it is sometimes possible. But probably not in Japan (^-^;)
The blue and white contrast is super pretty! The tree shadows on the snow look blue too. I made a reservation for a tour here (my very first!)
Thank you Emma! Yes, the whole world was bathed in blue light even this early in the morning. Great! This is just one of these places most tours visit! (^-^)
magic! these are special among all your wonders shared here.
they said coldest on record for Kyushu and that must be like a lonngg record (1000 years?)
snowed in Vancouver today, bleh, but in Japan I didn’t mind the rough weather as much. I had the idea that architecture is cultural, that’s why the houses are silly-inefficient because it is still better to have good insulation in heat too.
Thank you so much for your kind words Vish! Did you get any snow in Kyushu this year? I don’t think so, right? Yes, this winter has been hell, and snow again on the 29th! Amazing.
Beautiful pics! I like snow when I don’t have to walk in it.
Haha… I think so too. Unfortunately, I had to walk through a lot of it to take these photos… (^-^;) Thanks for the kind comment Sven!
The photos of the trees are beautiful and look like they’re from a dream
Thank you! I’m glad you like them. Yes, the trees are the perfect cut shape to contrast the cups of snow and the blue sky!
Love the first picture of the gate house across the moat. The snow really dresses up an already beautiful piece of architecture. Almost like a step back into 19th century Edo.
Thank you Matt! Yes, I thought so too. It’s nice, if only for a short moment, to see something that isn’t “now”, to imagine this might as well have been the 18th century!
I can’t wait to see snow! If it isn’t for the skyscrapers I would take the pictures as 19th century Edo.
Thanks Penman! Yes, everything becomes timeless with the snow! (^-^)
Yay for snow? I’m happy it started to warm up here
and now mr. sun is shining again!
Thanks for the pretty shots!
I would so much love to see your place…. when is Timibling the blog coming out? (^-^)
When I will have the ability to 1) make good photos 2)write good comments meaning the next life maybe?
