Tokyo Marathon 2012 Runners

Posted in People, Places by tokyobling on February 26, 2012

Today was one of the most important sporting events of the year here in Tokyo – the Tokyo Marathon! These last few years the whole country has been in a marathon craze and the event just gets more and more popular! Not only are the people running putting all their effort into it, but also a lot of people going there just to support the runners are giving their best. Certainly I myself have never been interested in long distance running before but it is just contagious, and today was great fun to watch the thousands and thousands of people running past. I picked the spot just after Ichigaya station to see the race. In part because it was just about 5km from the start so I figured people would look a little bit fresher for my photos, but also because there is a long stretch of straight road there with no tall buildings to cast shadows over the runners – a good place to take photos! I noticed that the average age of the runners were high, I saw a lot more people in their 60s and 70s than I saw people in their 20s. There was also a few ladies running with full make up looking much more fresh than I did and all I did was stand around! Amazing. I didn’t see much of the first one hundred runners, but among the general bulk of runners there were also quite a few foreigners, a Taiwanese girl had her flag and camera at the ready. As usual there were a lot of runners in costumes, here’s two of the more “plain” costumes, the Tokyo Tower and Pikachu. I’ll post some other costumed runners later tonight! There were also police all over the place to make sure that traffic ran smoothly despite the marathon, including these two very cool motorcycle police guarding a road accessing the main marathon route. I don’t think I could ever run a marathon, but I really respect those who do. This was my first time to photograph a long distance race, so I hope I’ll get better pictures next year!

Love these photos of perpetually smiling Japanese people, even when they are probably in agony after running a marathon! I especially love the shot of the guy with the Tokyo Tower on his head, so funny

Thank you Angela! Yes, they do smile a lot! But I think the multitude of people cheering them up really helped! I was around after the run and I saw so many people who could barely walk on their way home in subway… haha… (^-^)

Nice! I like the guy with the The Day We Unite-sweater, though I can’t read all it says.

Thank you Sven! Yes, there were quite a few runners with that shirt. I wonder what they meant?

Yup! You picked a good spot. If it was closer to the finish line I doubt the runners could smile as brightly. I respect everyone who can run such a long distance too, more over those who ran with short pants and without leggings. Isn’t it cold in Tokyo today?

Thank you Penman! I was really thinking tactically on this one (^-^;) Yes it was really very very cold that day in Tokyo, I was almost frozen solid from just standing in the same spot for more than 40 minutes, and I was wearing a lot of clothes.

Marathon with cos-play elements? A *man* wearing a pikachu hat? What fun!

    • tokyobling said, on March 8, 2012 at 1:53 pm

Of course! This is Tokyo, everything is better with cosplay in it. (^-^;)

Thank you for the kind comment! I did my best. Next year I will try even harder and make sure to get an even better spot! (^-^)

Great photos! The runners look so happy. I heard a Japanese guy came in second.

Thanks! I’m glad you liked them! Hope your husband is doing well over there and comes home soon. Hope too, that the next president you pick isn’t one of those war lovers we see on the news every day… (>_<)

I actually ran the tokyo marathon yesterday. I just want to thank everyone who came out to support. Unknowingly they provided the ganbette, high5′s and food ( : ] ), for me at least, I needed to cross the finish line.

Hi Chiba! Oh wow! Well done on you! I could have run maybe one 16th of it, on a good day. It was great to cheer everyone along and see their smiles. Too bad I didn’t know you were running, I would have found some way to get a good shot of you! (^-^;)

I laughed so much on the guy with the Tokyo Tower :D pikachu and the bunny girl is nice though!
I love those smiles on the runners when they go for a high-five from the spectators!

Haha… thank you! There were so many bunny girls! Too many to shoot them all! Yes, there was a couple of people high fiving as many runners as possible just in front of me, so much fun to watch!
