A Rainy Day in Asakusa – Street Photography

Posted in Animals, People, Places by tokyobling on May 16, 2012

Sometimes when I don’t have anything special to shoot I just enjoy going out with my camera and stand still in one spot for awhile, waiting for the the picture to come to me. I was in Asakusa, waiting for a couple of friends to come out of a store and the rain was pouring down, as it had for the last 24 hours. People were hurrying, hunkered down, almost scowling at the cold spring rain, but I still got some worthwhile snap shots. Every time I talk to tourists who have visited Japan they all tell me that the one thing they would have wanted to take more photographs of are the people and the crowds, so with that in my memory I try to always find as many people as possible for my photography. Usually, Asakusa is crowded beyond belief on weekends and sunnier days, so this was a good opportunity. I find that Asakusa really is the number one tourist spot in Japan, because there is something for everyone in a family, in a tour group or a group of friends: great shopping, great food, great culture, great crowds. You can’t go wrong going to Asakusa if you are traveling in a group!

Hi again. I like your work in general, and I always enjoy your postings, but I have to say that the little kid and the cat this time are both particularly fine.

Thanks again for doing this and sharing it –

      Those are my favorites, too.

But I also like the first shot of the ojisan biking with an umbrella. Nothing can stop him. Nothing!! ;)

So many things about this series are reminders of Japan- the little girl decked out head to toe in rain gear, riding a bike with an umbrella, cats seeking shelter from rain, rain boots… this really captures the feeling of a rainy day here!

I never saw Asakusa so deserted! I especially love the last shot of the cat hiding underneath the roof, so cute. If it’s any consolation, the weather is also very wet and very cold here in Belgium :(

Haha… yes! The rain has a way of driving people indoors! I hope Belgium enjoys better weather by now!?

That umbrella holder attached to a bicycle is an amazing contraption! How fortunate that such interesting photos come to you without you seeking them!
