Sarumawashi – Monkey Antics
I’ve posted a couple of the photos before but not the whole series of this wonderful traditional style monkey performer in Gaienmae last year. At some festivals in Japan you’ll see this, if you are lucky. After more than a decade in Japan I have been lucky enough to see it 3 or 4 times: Sarumawashi or Sarugei. At least as early as the Nara period (710-794) you would be able to see these wandering performers entertaining townspeople with their acrobatic monkeys. If you see these delightful combos around town, make sure to see it out!

I’ve never seen a live sarumawashi! The monkey has such a personality as well as a great skill. Which one is Hiroshi or Yasushi, the monkey or the man?
I’ve seen sarumawashi in a mall when we were with Hidechan!
Lucky Juuri! (^-^)
It’s a great show! Like zoominginjapan says I think the monkey is Hiroshi! (^-^)
Hey cool! This is the same artist I saw in April this year in Kanagawa (Kawasaki)!!!!
They were hilarious!
I took tons of photos of him and his monkey Hiroshi, too!
Haha… great! Yes, I have seen this duo three times but this was the first time I managed to catch the entire show…! Will you blog those pics? (^-^)
I love the monkey’s ill-fitting shortpants and the aloof dog! He must have been so puzzled… I wonder what was going through his doggy mind? XD
Haha… yes the pants are great! I wonder if he wears diapers underneath?
This little guy’s face looks so similar to a human’s:) I love monkeys (well every living creature..) * – *
Thanks Timi! (^-^)
