Hachioji Matsuri Dashi

Posted in Japanese Traditions, People, Places by tokyobling on August 9, 2012

Like many other of the main festivals in Japan, the Hachioji Matsuri has these giant, decorated, slow and ponderous festival floats, called “dash” (山車) in Japanese. Each neighborhood puts up their own and they compete with musicians and decorations to attract the most attention. Here’s a few snapshots of one of the dash that had two dancers, a lion and a demon instead of the normal one dancer. Great fun and when the dancers aren’t busy “battling” the other dash, they might even pose for the photographer.

On the last three pics, I love the men laughing at the background :D

Thanks Timi! There’s lot of laughter and smiles in these festivals… people doing things together!
