Keeping Tokyo Safe

Posted in People, Places by tokyobling on January 7, 2013

All through New Year’s there’s a tremendous amount of emergency vehicles, police officers, officials, public workers and men and women in uniform standing by to keep Tokyo safe. Here’s a few of the random snaps I got in and around Asakusa and Ueno on New Year’s Night. Not the best quality shots but at least bloggable. By the way, isn’t the fire department Kumade (熊手) fantastic? I don’t think I have ever seen one like this! Stay safe in 2013 everyone!

A panda, fire truck and ambulance? Oh my!

Next year they should make the crane bigger. The poor bird is barely there!

Haha… Well, it is near Ueno so the Panda is “their” animal… (^-^;)

I’m crazy about fire stations lately! What nice shots. I’m very proud of Japan for keeping the traditional uniforms in various lines of work (esp. police & nurses!) instead of copping out to a more casual (I think it’s more like “lazy”) look like the US! Those policemen look so smart! ;)

I don’t see cops being casual here (in California) — especially the highway patrol in their mountie-like hats. I definitely thought the Japanese nurses were a little too retro with their hats — felt so 50s!

There’s differences between jobs and uniforms I guess! Highway Patrol usually looks great! (^-^)

Thanks Juuri! I totally agree… since when did sloppy clothes become acceptable in our society?! Especially in official functions…

Have you been to the Ikebukuro Bosaikan? Loved the earthquake simulator! Loved it so much that upon returning to (my area of) California, I assembled an earthquake safety kit in earnest. Yikes…

Haven’t been there but I have been to a couple of other ones! That is probably a very smart thing to do… (^-^)

In a way I’m sad, that we need something like the police and such, on the other hand I always respect them working hard all day long, and still smile to everyone when needed :)

Luckily they are not as busy here in safe Tokyo as compared to many other cities around the world… (^-^)

I like the pictures and like the subject.. I also think that the Japanese Police and Fire departments are seconded to none. I have much respect for them . Also on the subject of keeping Tokyo safe I am working to start Volunteer Mounted Patrol Team(s) in Japan at lest 1 in Tokyo and other areas as well if I can get people interested in helping get it going. I hope you don’t mind me putting this here.. And thank you for your Blog.

Hi! A volunteer mounted patrol! Wow! I wonder if there is one already near Bajikouen in Setagaya ward? Someone mentioned it but I am not sure! Good luck! If I had a horse I would join up!
