Nikon D3 Cut In Half

I visited the Tokyo Eco Products convention the other day (2008/12/12) to be exact and naturally I headed straight for the Nikon booth where my gaze immediately fell upon this beauty: a Nikon D3 cut in half for all of our camera porn pleasures! For a technophile camera lover as myself, I was for once happy to be a foreigner in Japan: the staff politely ignored my feeble attempts to take a decent photo through the counter glass. I felt slightly incestous: a Nikon D60 photographing a crippled D3. Behold all the beauty that is Nikon technology! And pray that you never see anything like this again.

Update! This post is not merely as cool, it is just a dismantled Nikon Coolpix S60. It is cool, however, to compare the lenses! The 14-24 is impressive on the D3, the S60… I can barely see it!

Dunno about you people, but I think that in today’s world, a 6mpix half-frame dslr just wouldn’t make it…
And it looks like it has no weather sealing.

I once visited a med school and tucked away in the basement was a display with a human body cut into 1″ thick sections and sandwiched in plexiglass. You could flip though this guy like a book mounted to a wall. Almost as scary as this post…

A lot of space can be saved to make camera smaller using a digital viewfinder and no mirrow ……. and new optics. That is a big problem. Big change.

Un visiteur de la Convention Tokyo Eco Products a ramené des clichés d’un D3 monté coupé en deux et à posté ses images sur son blog. Simplement coupé en deux. 🙂 Avis aux amateurs de belle mécanique, à voir absolument !…

I really wish I had gone to this eco product exhibition. Thanks for sharing this very unique look at a D3. It was a great find.

I too was amazed by the thickness of the glass in the 14-24mm. Now I know why the good Nikkor lenses are so heavy.

You probably didn’t need to be a gaijin devil to be allowed to take photos.. places in Japan are generally fine with your taking photos of anything (no flash, no tripod anyway). Even fine art museums have signs up saying “photography ok”.

The only place I’ve seen with photo restrictions was the Sony store/exhibition centre in Ginza, where a small number of items have signs next to them saying “No Photography”. Others, like this 70 inch LCD TV, are fine.

  I’ve lived in Japan a long time and it’s changing, more and more places aren’t welcoming photographers. Especially ones like me that usually carry a huge reflector, three strobes and come in tow with a crazy looking model!

I have been the proud owner of the D3 for nearly a year now. I keep on asking myself how can Nikon improve on this camera. Then they brought out the D3s and the D3x. Still the D3 will be more than a good work horse for me for a few years yet. Maybe I will be saying the same about the D4 in the next couple of years. Happy that mine is not cut in half.

Not that long ago, a collection of Vivitar Series 1 cutaways was sold on Yahoo Japan Auctions; including a couple of gold lenses sliced lengthways. It’s always fun to imagine…
