Narita Airport Mascot

Posted in Stuff by tokyobling on December 19, 2008

There is something to be said about the Japanese, they don’t do anything without assigning it an official mascot! At the Eco Products fair last week I came across this budding icon of the the green aviation industry. I can’t imagine there are many less polluting areas of Japan than Narita Airport outside Tokyo, but still, they try talking about CO2 reductions and what not. I like that the mascot is at least wearing goggles and a proper aviatior scarf. Although truth be said, he might be too fat to fit into a cockpit. Wildly popular with the kids, his sidekick was forever waiting in his shadow.

He’s got a homepage too and apparently his name is Kutan.

Hi! I wouldn’t know really, I haven’t been to Narita in ages, but I see these stuffed toys a transportation fairs and the like, so there might be a gift shop selling them at the air port. Good luck!

There’s a book coming out soon (here in the US) about this sort of mascot:

Fuzz and Fur: Japan’s Costumed Characters
By Edward Harrison and John Harrison

    (Amazon.com give a release date of Feb. 1, 2011.)
