Giant Cat Made of Small Cats

Posted in Japanese Traditions, Places by tokyobling on October 29, 2010

The Maurnouchi Building opposite Tokyo station is easily one of my favorite places in Tokyo. Whenever I’m lucky to pass the area I make a point of taking a detour through the building and see if there’s anything going on. This week, they’ve been holding a art and music festival! One of the most interesting exhibits was this festival float of a classic Japanese style roof with a giant cat made of small cats is perching. Huge claws, and eyes made out of giant bells, it looks pretty cool close up! Originally made as a student project at the Tokyo University of Art (東京藝術大学) for use in traditional festival, it is obviously one of the coolest festival floats I have ever seen. This university is celebrating their 120th birthday this month, by the way.

And trust the Japanese never to do anything just half-way. The woman playing a piece by Johannes Brahms in the sixth picture? She is acutally playing on the very same piano that Brahms wrote the piece on! That is stylish. If you’re in Tokyo today or until Sunday during lunch time, I really recommend going here. Free, of course. More info, in Japanese, here. There’s also an opera event at around 3 or 4 every day, but due to work I can’t see it. Let me know how it was if you go!

Thanks Timi! Yes, I’m surprised I hadn’t seen the idea around before. I’m sure this will be big on the internets in the future! (^-^)
