C57 Locomotive – The Lady

Posted in Places by tokyobling on November 9, 2011

There’s been quite a few train related posts lately so here’s another one! In March this year I visited the Koganei park here in Tokyo for the first time and met this grand old Lady, a decommissioned type C57 train nicknamed 貴婦人, The Lady, that used to run in Asahikawa in Hokkaido until 1974. I have read somewhere that using today’s technology it would be impossible to build a locomotive like this. There’s still a few train lines operated around Japan just for the use of old style locomotives, all very popular with tourists. This train is open for visitors from March to November every year, so if you’re in the area, go have a look!

Thanks Karen! You know, I wouldn’t mind living in a train car.

4-6-?? I couldn’t make out any trailing pilot wheels. (4-6-0 is a legitimate configuration, called a Ten Wheel over here.) She’s a little beauty.

(My steam engine heart belongs to the 2-6-6-6 “Allegheny” at the Henry Ford Museum. She’s staggeringly huge, that engine.)

I think it’s just nice to see when something is loved and taken care of. Then I want to love it too, out of respect for the person’s effort.

But it’s shiny, so very shiny. I really like that.

Já vi esse tipo de trem no Brasil e eles parecem bem velhos/usados. Esses trens do Japão parecem que estão sempre com cara de novos! Parecem que acabaram de sair da fábrica! Vi vários vídeos deles no youtube. =D
