Home Sweet Home – Minami Kawasaki
At the National Art Center I found this wonderful grouping by talented Minami Kawasaki, 川崎みなみ (what a fantastic name!), of Joshibi University of Art and Design (女子美術大学). Three wonderfully cute little puppies in felt. Called “Home Sweet Home” I guess this grouping is dangerously close to the uncanny valley for some people but one of the things I have noticed about living in Japan is that you get less sensitive to it. Felt as an artistic medium seems to be on the rise as well, every year I see more and more of it. I couldn’t find anything about Ms. Kawasaki online, again it’s my western perspective but it feels strange that young artists in Japan don’t do more to promote themselves!
Amazing… I want puppies…

Cute…and slightly creepy, don’t you think? I’m totally in awe of what the artist can do with felt, though. This piece really raises the craft to an art.

Absolutely well in there in the uncanny valley! (^-^;) I agree. I don’t even see the felt, the representation is so real I don’t notice the material anymore! Weird…

The first thing I have in mind, that something so simple can be so life-like.
The second thing is the contrary, the little puppy with open eyes has no light in his eyes, so it remains a doll 😐
Btw, the one with the smile is my favourite.

I think a better lighting set up would have produced a bit of light in his eyes… (^-^;) Still, to me they are so lifelike it’s almost scary… (^-^;)

How lovely. It’s amazing how materials like felt can be used to make such quality and realistic art.
I’d love to see more of this kind of stuff ^_^

I had to read the sentence stating that the puppies are made from felt several times before my brain excepted it as fact. Amazing work!

Thank you Jennifer! I totally agree. I was really up close as well, but it was hard to get that they weren’t real!

Congratulations. Wonderful work. I’m writing from Caracas-Venezuela (South America) where actually I am doing search for my Magister thesis about The simbolism of the dog in the history of art. I wander if someone can put me in touch with Minami Kawasaki. Thanks. Juan Lorenzo Hernandez
