More Shibuya Nebuta Matsuri 2012
More photos from the mini Nebuta Matsuri in Tokyo’s Shibuya district last weekend! The first time I saw the nebuta matsuri was here in Shibuya, and I didn’t really get the costumes or the strange melody of the flutes, but the more I see it the more I get it and now I think I am hooked. One of these days I have to make my way up north to Aomori prefecture and see this festival “in the wild”!
Haha great pics! How do you hear about all of these festivals?

Thanks! Well, there’s posters at some stations for the bigger festivals, and I get some from articles on the net, some I knew from just stumbling into them and some are recommended by offline friends. I wish more people who know this blog could recommend me festivals to visit! (^-^)

Those…extremely decorated… straw hats are unexpected. Is there a note of Brazilian Carnaval influence there? (I am aware that there is a significant Brazilian – Japanese community.)

Good question! I have never seen an old photo of the festival with those garish hats. The oldest photo I could find was of the first electrified float, so it could have been anytime between 1900 and 1944. Prior to that I do not think they had any special hats. But I could be wrong. Maybe someone with more historical knowledge than me could shed some light on this?
While researching this I found an image of a nebuta float that was 10 stories high… huge!
