The Best Pizza in the World – Nagoya Osu

Posted in Places, Shops by tokyobling on November 5, 2012

In one little corner store on one of the many shopping streets in Nagoya’s 400 year old Osu district, lies what is supposedly the best pizza in the world. The thing with pizza though, as my old friend used to say: “even bad pizza is pretty good”, so I imagine it would be difficult to judge the quality of it. In Italy, there is a body of professionals that are dedicated to ranking the best pizza in the world every year, and in 2010 the Margherita of this little restaurant won first prize. I had to try one on my second visit to Osu (you can read about my first visit to the area here), and it was indeed, fantastic. The most fantastic thing though, was maybe the prize. Being used to the astronomical sums of pizzas here in Asia (I never did find a decent pizza in Hong Kong for under 200 HKD), and especially in Tokyo where even the most modest pizza is 800 yen, the pizzas at this remarkable little restaurant, despite the hype were even cheaper, for less than 800 yen I got this pizza plus a drink. Not bad for the best pizza in the world I think! The restaurant is divided in two parts, one is a proper restaurant while the other, the larger is more like a fast food eatery. The proper restaurant is often fully booked and there’s always a crowd in front trying to get a table. You can either book in advance, or you can go to the drop in eatery to the same which serves the same pizza but in a more basic style. The second floor is better, if you can pick a seat by yourself, but I enjoyed the first floor and watching the cooks putting all their effort into making the pizza in the big oven. All in all, this food experience reminded me of the old saying about Japan: “all food here is good”. You’ll be hard tested to have a bad food experience in this country! And personally I think it is fun that a little eatery in a run down shopping arcade in little Nagoya could beat all the best chefs of Europe!

What, this pizza is better than any pizza made in Italy? Is the cook Italian? I hope there wasn’t an uproar in Italy when it was announced! How I wish I could try it! The pizza I had at the only Italian restaurant in this town was awful.

The chef is Japanese! I don’t know how the news were taken in Italy but the jury was italian! You must try next time you visit Nagoya.

This is a great find indeed, since although I think Japanese cooking is the greatest in the world, I hadn’t found a pizza in Japan that was very good. Too bad it’s a little far from Tokyo! Come on, Tokyo! Let’s rise to the challenge!

Haha… maybe they can open a restaurant in Tokyo as well! But the prices would be far higher, maybe double!

Juuri, your father says he wants to try this place as he goes to Nagoya often when he goes to Japan.

I seriously beg to differ! It might be because of where I live now but they can’t do Mexican food at all. I was very disappointed with it. And like I said I’m fairly certain I’m spoiled with real Mexican food cause I live so close to the border. But other than Mexican food, I believe the Japanese usually get it right with good. But I love their fusion foods the most. Like Pepper Lunch how I miss that place. 😛 If we ever return to Japan I’ll be pigging out for sure!

That pizza looks SO good. Pizza in Asia is a budgetary problem, mainly because of imported cheese costs, and the excuse that ‘oh, it is foreign, it costs more’ (just like Japanese sets outside of Japan).

But we can get flour, so we should just make our own!

Totally agree, and I sometimes do, make my own that is. Not as good as this restaurant’s though. (^-^;)

I tried this and although it was decent I still think the best pizza I ever had was at Tony’s Brick oven Pizza in Kawaii, hawaii. This is definitely more of an italian pizza though and I have a more American notion of what pizza should be like. The fact I came here for pizza and received pizza does deserve its own reward though as pizza can mean pretty much anything in Japan.

I have never been to either Hawaii nor Italy so I can’t really compare the taste of them, but at that price, here in Japan, they were pretty much unbeatable! (^-^)
