Kao=S Sword Performance – Kaori Kawabuchi

Posted in People, Places by tokyobling on November 30, 2012

Sometimes you just stumble upon amazing performances – for free – if you just keep yourself busy enough and are not afraid to explore the back streets of Tokyo. On a converted parking lot in Shibuya back in September I saw the music and performance art group Kao=S, with amongst others the gorgeous Kaori Kawabuchi (川渕かおり) and led by guitarist Shuji Yamagiri (山切修二), in the first photo, who is known among gamers and otaku alike as one of the main motion actresses for the hit game Final Fantasy where she used her sword performance skills to help give the computer generated characters a realistic motion pattern. I am not sure that performing in broad daylight is the most fitting for a group like this, but they pulled it off well in the scorching sun and way above 34 degrees heat. The musicians and sword performers combine to make an exciting and artistic show, I wish I could have gotten good shots of the entire cast, but most of my shots were lost due to the glaring sun blowing out most highlights. If you want to see snippets of their show I recommend heading over to their homepage here. And by the way, I didn’t do any photoshop on the girl in the last photo, she must have the most amazing skin of any human being alive in Japan today – absolutely flawless. Either that or she is a remarkable talent in the world of cosmetics.

Given that the woman in the last image has almost nonexistent eyebrows due to heavy foundation, and nearly nonexistent eyes with all that mascara, I’d say that’s one amazing makeup job…plus there looks to be a scar under her (right?) eye. Hard to tell.

If I only had a tenth of the fierceness of the first woman (Kaori?), I’d be unstoppable. (Well, I’d want her looks too)

Could well be! It doesn’t come out well in the photos, but I was seated front row and her skin looked even better in real life. I think we all need a little bit more fierceness and a little less contentedness. (^-^;)

I like being content at times. It’s complacency that’s annoying 🙂

And maybe her eyebrows were shaved off? Either way, it looks funky.

Almost all Japanese women pluck their eyebrows, and up until quite recently historically, it was common for upper class ladies to shave their eyebrows completely, many people still do (especially fashionable young women and older ladies).

I agree – Enough with the complacency! (^O^)/

Wow! When I was little and despaired that my eyelashes weren’t long like what I saw in pictures, I cut them in hopes they’d grow faster (isn’t it also an Asian thing to shave off baby hair because of that false idea? I still have a pic of me with a mohawk!). It took a while before anyone noticed, thank goodness. I can’t imagine what woulda happened had I shaved the eyebrows too.

And of course, being the clueless-about-makeup person that I am, I don’t get the plucking or threading eyebrow thing. Unless you have a unibrow, of course 🙂

Never got why Japanese women wear so much makeup when they have lovely skin to begin with! At least the guys in these pics aren’t wearing makeup (I hope)

I can’t believe hos much make up she has on but wow that a great job! I can see she is wearing a lot of foundation since her eyebrows are almost gone. This set is amazing I wish I could have seen it in person!!!

You should have been there! It was much too quick and much too sunny, the sword fights were excellent! There were about 6-7 fighters I could not get a good shot off… (^-^;)
