More Chichibu Night Festival – Saitama

Posted in Japanese Traditions, People, Places by tokyobling on December 4, 2012

I didn’t get to the grand finale to the big Chichibu Night Festival that was last night, but here are more photos from the last part of the the warming up event. These huge festival carts are massively difficult to move and requires the combined strength of more than a dozen men just to steer it in the right direction. In order to turn it around you need even more people and some very clever levers, but I’ll post more photos of that later, taken during the day. Although it is called a night festival it starts in the day and goes on until nightfall, leaving plenty of time for visitors to get on the last trains back to Tokyo. The men in the gorgeous outfits are actually tied to the wagons, as they tilt quite heavily during operation and it would not be fun to fall of. I also expect they had quite a lot to drink in order to stand the zero degree weather. Just as the festival ended we actually saw some snow fall, unseasonably early in the winter for this part of Japan! More photos to come!

I think I’ll spend some more time looking at the man with the tasteful and very flattering facial hair (sort of a Japanese Ben Affleck) in the 8th photo…

Gorgeous photos – I love these costumes and the bokeh effect you got on the background of some of the photos. Your life must be filled with festival after festival! And kudos to you for also standing in 0 degree weather!

What’s the point of living if you can’t attend as many festivals as you want? (^-^) It’s fantastic! It was really cold… at least I had come prepared with layers and layers of warm clothing. Too bad it’s hard to use a camera with gloves.

It was – a different and better world! I miss it already! Everyday life has nothing on the festival!

Hello, I am a college student designing a magazine layout as a graphic design student project and am curating an article about the Chichibu Night Festival. The magazine is for the class an my design portfolio only and will not be mass-produced, distributed or sold. I was wondering if I could use some of your photographs for the article?
