Daisankikaku – Koenjo Awaodori
Here a few photos of one of the more noticeable teams at last year’s Koenji Awaodori festival, the Daisankikaku Awaodori (第三企画阿波踊り), a corporate team made up of employees at one of Tokyo’s bigger real estate marketing companies. Their uniforms look almost like they were designed by a race car maker! This team is famous for their energy, always giving as much as they possibly can to entertain and impress their audience. And it seems like they got a young new member as well. Just a few more weeks until the Awaodori dance season kicks of for real here in Tokyo!
The expressions are great, you take wonderful portraits!

Not only the people appeared were THE Character,
to capture each of them on spot on moment is a skill.
(Of cause I know, they are the good-one though.) 🙂

The sweat on the face of #4 makes me wonder how they survive the heat, especially with all that makeup. Gaah! More power to ’em; if I were out there I’d be dripping and any makeup would be gone in minutes…unless I was the guy in the last pic with a sweat catcher 🙂 (I’m sure that’s not the purpose, but why do they tie those things under their noses?)

I have never done this dancing but I have run next to them taking pictures for an entire evening and believe me I spent all of the short breaks between stages drinking fluids non-stop! I can only imagine how it must be to actually dance this. When it comes to make up I think that women are blessed with a water proof kind of make up these days. It’s the only excuse I can think of. (^-^) It’s not a sweat catcher, it’s a traditional way to tie your tenugui or handkerchief and hiding most of your face at the same time. It is called dorobokaburi and was popular with thieves and scoundrels in the 18th century. I think some dance teams like to portray the scoundrel or rouge to contrast with the beautiful lady dancers! Of course in some teams women dance mens parts too, and you’ll sometimes see women dance with this style as well. (^-^)

As someone who doesn’t get makeup, I’m not sure I’d want to be “blessed” with waterproof stuff! As it is, when I get makeup applied I forget and half of it gets wiped off in no time. So I’d have to be a scoundrel then, just to keep the sweat outta my eyes 😀

The make-up has to be layered on quite thick as it’s part of the costume, like stage make-up. Pretty sure it is waterproof as it never seems to run, and the men and women alike invariably look drenched at the end. 🙂
