Daigen Taiko Drummers – Shinagawa

Posted in Japanese Traditions, People, Places by tokyobling on September 30, 2013

I am extremely fortunate in that I am born a walker. I love walking. Can’t get enough of it. And few cities are so perfectly walkable as Tokyo. I often get off trains a couple off stations early just to get the pleasure of walking the final part of my journey, and I seldom use connecting trains, preferring to get somewhat in the right direction and then walk the last bit. Yesterday I lucked out again as I walking to a place two stations Shinagawa, and halfway there I lucked out and happened to find myself at a street performance by one of Tokyo’s most famous taiko drumming groups, the Daigen group, who has won several top awards both nationally and internationally. Even their junior members looked tougher than most grown up men in the audience! Their manager kept asking us to get closer but from where I was at front every beat of the drums brought sharp pain to my ears so I can understand the audience for keeping their distance!

Now when I think of you I will envision a wonderfully worn pair of comfy shoes. Is it a bit of wanderlust, which is a wonderful thing to have I think. You find the most wonderful things. In which your blog benefits from these wonderful things you find on your journeys.
I am not there but I can feel the pound of the drums in my ears. It’s very dramatic. These gals look very enthusiastic. Isn’t it great when people have a passion for something. Isn’t it equally wonderful that you can capture their passion so well with your photos!!!

Oh you should see my shoes, they would make a shoemaker weep! (^-^;) And the holes in my “wandering trousers”. Thank you for the very kind comment…!

Holes are the spoils of a well spent day, plus in the summer they make for good air conditioner. Plus shoes need to be worn to feel loved, and don’t they fit better the more that you wear them. I’ve found myself wearing a pair of black ballet slipper all the time, they go with everything and are now the most comfortable thing to walk in. I heart them and they know it. BTW, sorry for the late reply. Life has gotten in the way of my virtual life.

Awesome captures! I also agree about walking but today I just bought a bicycle and it’s amazing, especially here in Kyoto!

Thanks! Bicycles are great! But even those are too fast for me. In Kyoto though, the bicycle is king! So much to see there.

I agree with D’s comment about what these photos evoke. Thanks again for another great insight.

Thanks! It is impossible to do taiko justice in photos, but I try! (^-^;)
