Odawara City By Night

Posted in Places by tokyobling on October 21, 2013

The other day I passed through Kanagawa Prefecture, between Shizuoka Prefecture and Tokyo City, so I took the opportunity to make a brief stop in the castle town of Odawara. This city is one of the overlooked gems of a day trip from Tokyo. It has a castle, a beautiful beach, historical buildings, delicious local specialities and to top it all, it is just 850 yen one way from Shinjuku in the heart of Tokyo, by the Odakyu Line. To me it is right up there with Nikko and Kamakura on the list of great day trips from Tokyo. I took these photos of Odawara station, and the castle silhouetted against the sunset. Odawara has a tiny entertainment district south of the station reached by ducking into the wonderfully retro Osharedoori entrance arch. All the major sights are within walking distance from the station so you never need to worry about local transport once you reach the station. Use the tags to find all the other posts I have done about Odawara over the years!

“Come join us on the 2nd Floor!” Well, would you? Lol.

Is the 紅葉 starting already or is it over now? Kind of hard to see within the cityscapes you captured…

No time! So many eateries! But I liked the cute character. (^-^) I think it is starting in the Kanto area at least. Maybe it will peak sometime next month?

One of my funniest memories of Japan was in the little entertainment district outside Odawara station. It was mid-November a couple of years ago, and I was passing through to Hakone. It was about midday, and I had about an hour wait for my bus so I walked around since I had never really been in Odawara before. I walked into the entertainment district, which at that time of day was pretty lifeless, but they had Bing Crosby’s “Joy to the World” playing at full blast on speakers up and down the street in an endless loop. As I walked up and down looking at each restaurant all I could hear was Bing Crosby singing Joy to the World, over, and over, and over again until I couldn’t take it anymore. It was surreal. Every time I think of Odawara now I’m going to think of Bing Crosby!
    Great Pictures!

Haha… I can imagine it! I have never really understood the need for outdoors music here in Japan, but having visited some smaller cities I think I might be starting to understand where this custom comes from. Bing Crosby though… (^-^;) Thanks for the kind comment Tyler!
