Yoshinoya Specials
One of the most talked about fast food restaurants in Japan right now is Yoshinoya, a gyudon (beef and rice bowl) chain store that is practically everywhere in Japan. It is always cheap and delicious but right now they have two seasonal menu items that are pretty much extraordinary in terms of value for money, the Gyusuki and Gyuchige, a smaller version of the famous sukiyaki and a famous Korean dish. I had the Gyuchige and it was fantastic. At only 580 yen per dish it is pretty much unbeatable! For a proper sukiyaki meal you’d usually have to pay three or four times as much. If you are in Japan while these meals are still on their menu, you really must visit Yoshinoya.
But beware! Some restaurants might be sold out, and it is usually only served in the afternoon and evening after the morning and lunch hour rushes.

I used to eat at a Yoshinoya Beef Bowl here in the US (possibly in Boulder, Colorado) a bunch of years ago; haven’t seen any of them recently. It looks like there was one in midtown Manhattan, but it closed in 2012.
There is a very small mostly-Korean place not far from me called “Seoul Food”. The place is tiny, and their regular menu is very limited, but they almost always have a special of some sort. A couple weeks ago they offered Gyuchige or something very close to it, and it was stellar. I’m sure it was more expensive than Yoshinoya’s, but that’s life; they don’t have the economy of scale that a chain does. These folks are, though, very careful about their ingredients; everything is extremely fresh, and I really like the food there. I also like having a friendly relationship with the people who are making the food, which is difficult at a chain.

I think Seoul Food must be the most common name for a Korean eatery outside of Korea. I can think of a couple in Tokyo alone!
I also much prefer to eat at places where I can benefit the owners and staff directly without going through a corporation but often a combination of budget/curiosity/habit/lack of courage/risk averse eating takes overhand and I default on the chain stores. When I am rich though. In the future…. (^-^;)
