Kakunodate Ice Cream and Sakura

Posted in Shops, Places, People by tokyobling on April 27, 2014

If you plan on following the the sakura season (the cherry blossoms) as it progresses northwards you are probably thinking about visiting Kakunodate in Akita prefecture, one of the most famous cherry blossom viewing spots in the north of Japan. Kakunodate is famous for its hanami, or cherry blossom viewing along their beautiful river, but they are also famous for their cheap and delicious sakura ice cream ladies, skillfully creating sweets in the shape of flowers in front of the customer. I don’t remember the price but it was very cheap. Kakunodate is easily reached by the shinkansen train, and very popular with both foreign and Japanese tourists. Enjoy!

And they do it surprisingly swiftly – not many seconds per cone! (^-^)

I took cake decorating classes and learned how to make roses — this actually doesn’t look too hard, as long as the ice cream is soft enough to start. A few indents to the white base, slap on four pink slabs and shape a little, and it does look to be fast. Doesn’t look like there’s a choice, with a big surface area and a blunt tool 🙂

I think the Tennessee housewives were more surprised at my presence, as I was the only one with a day job 🙂 Had a blog post about this years ago — my cakes provided much entertainment for coworkers (who mocked my epic fails, but still gobbled everything down in seconds).

But I did learn how to make a rose, which is why this looked familiar. Pretty easy with the right tools. I’m not sure how they manage to keep their fingers intact with that ginormous spatula. Brr!

Beautiful photos! My parents used to live in Akita and the baba-hera ice cream is still my all time favorite. So good 🙂

That must be the most beautifuL ice cream I’ve ever seen in my Life. I’m not sure I’d have the heart to eat it >.<

Thank you Sonya! I had one, of course, but now I can’t remember what flavor it was. It was more like sherbet than ice cream though. Hmm…

I just remember the wasabi flavored ice cream I tried in Kyoto. Not good.

Really? I have loved all the ones I have tried so far. Usually it is just a slightly mustardish vanilla. This def. was nothing strange though.
