Yushima Tenjin Festival 2013

Posted in Japanese Traditions, People, Places by tokyobling on May 24, 2014

It is the last weekend of May and that means festival time. In the Good Old Days, when rice farming was the main activity of most people in Japan this was the time after the rice was in the field, the paddies were flooded and people had some free time. Time to have fun and time to appease the gods at the same time. I don’t think hardly anyone who participates in the modern Tokyo festival is especially concerned with rice farming but most of them are probably much busier than the average rice farmer was 500 years ago. The festivals live on and one of the bigger festivals this weekend is the Yushima Tenjin matsuri, in Bunkyo Ward right next to Ueno. I took these photos of last year’s festival and this year too we have excellent weather!

I am not sure what we have done to deserve this fantastic weather this year. I hope it lasts!
