Sanjamatsuri Festival Dog

Posted in Animals by tokyobling on June 7, 2014

Every year I visit the huge Sanja matsuri, or festival, in Tokyo’s Asakusa area I am sure to catch at least one new animal participant! So far I have seen dogs, marmots, cats, pigs, parrots and even monkeys. This year I saw this wonderfully well dressed little dog, loving the attention and the treats he was getting from the crowds that formed around him.

The tiny paper fan tucked into his obi at the back is a perfect detail. Sorry for the poor picture quality though, the light had almost completely disappeared when I took these and the crowds of people were blocking out what little light came from shops and street lights. If you want to see more festival styled animals, please see this dog here or these cats here and here!

I like animals, but I never quite understand why people dress their pets and do their pets like it. This little guy seems to like the attention. So he probably does like it. It’s really cute and the outfit seems so detailed.

But with the little fella standing it makes me think that he was a man that was transformed in a dog. The first shot gives me the feeling that he is pensive, maybe wondering what happened and how can turn back into a human. And the three following pictures are his investigative work captured. You’ve got a whole story there on film…

Kyaaaaaaaah! What a perfect little omatsuri-fashion! Some dogs don’t like clothes, but this leetle fellow seems to enjoy it! (My doggie also loves wearing a bowtie and gets excited when I get it out.)

Isn’t he just lovely? I have noticed the clothes things with dogs in Japan too. Many dogs go crazy when the owners take the clothes out. I think it signals to them “you are going to be pampered, lots of people will want to talk to you, and I will spend the next hour touching you and noticing you.” And they notice they are being noticed. I doubt there are owners who force dogs to wear clothes when they are obviously not into it.
