Tokyo Tower At Dusk

Posted in Places by tokyobling on June 30, 2014

It is hard to resist getting anywhere near the iconic safety-orange and white Tokyo Tower with a camera without taking a few pictures. The tower’s colors were picked with regards to international air safety regulations which happened to work out well because they are pretty close to the colors of older shrines and temples here in Japan. In 1989 the Tower received a new make over courtesy of legendary lighting designer Motoko Ishii whose work has since inspired to countless other lighting make overs of Japanese and foreign tourist spots.

When TV broadcasts started in Japan the need for a tall and powerful TV broadcasting antenna became obvious and many local TV companies took matters into their own hands and started putting up their own private television towers all over Tokyo. This worried the government since they weren’t too fond of the idea of Tokyo being covered in huge private towers. Instead they built one large tower big enough to cover most of the Kanto region around Tokyo. It is 333m tall. These days it has been outgrown by the Skytree and new technology has rendered it obsolete. Despite talks of taking it down it has been preserved, so far, as one of the most popular landmarks in Tokyo.

In the last photo I had a little bit of fun turning it black and white. It looks almost like a piece of negative film!

I hope they don’t tear it down! It’s such an iconic place!! I didn’t know it was used as a broadcast antenna but it would be awful to get rid of it!!

Love your shots taken during the “blue hour,” as always! I never knew about this magical photo window until I started reading your blog and seeing what astounding photos you take, right at twilight. I especially love Tokyo Tower when the orange and blue are almost exact opposites!

Thank you! Nice shots on your FB page! I was not the only one who noticed the exact opposites, but you think in color, I am old school black and white… (^-^;)
