Shinto Rituals at Kitazawa Hachimangu

Posted in Japanese Traditions, People, Places by tokyobling on October 5, 2014

One of the main draws of the annual grand Kitazawa Hachimangu festival in Tokyo’s Setagaya District is the beautiful shinto rituals and dances that are performed at the shrine’s Kagura stage. I took these photos of the performances at this year’s festival a few weeks ago. The children and young people who perform these rituals with such seriousness are really fantastic. I am already looking forward to next year’s festival!

The little girls with the maple leaves are my vote from all the pictures, they remind me of someone but can’t get it who..still lovely. They took it really seriously as I see 🙂

i’m surprised to see the costumes they wear don’t look like typical kimonos. dare i say they have some korean look to them.

I am not too familiar with Korean costumes, but the happi coats at least are very typical Japanese festival costumes these days! They used to be worn by all merchants and tradesmen back in the old days.

i think i’m just used to seeing the typical kimono type of costumes when it comes to japanese traditional clothing. i certainly need to travel more in japan to be exposed to all sorts of traditional outfits.
