Belated 2000th Post

Posted in Opinion by tokyobling on October 27, 2014

Awhile ago I thought I should start the countdown to the 2000th post on this blog, make something special to celebrate it. But then I thought it would be better to wait until the 3650th post, as that would mean the blog would have hit a 10 year anniversary – If all goes to plan. But reality has a way of getting into your way, and in my case reality came in the form of an “upload maximum”. WordPress allows free bloggers like me a maximum of 3.0 GB of storage space, a limit that I hit several months ago. I could buy an upgrade, and I was about to, when I realized that running this blog for free with almost no income at all at considerable cost to myself already, adding a yearly subscription fee to my burden would be insane. So I started deleting older posts, to the tune of one or two per day. My post counter actually started going downwards (since I often had to delete two to four older posts of 2-4 pictures each to make room for a proper 12-16 picture post) and I realized that at this rate I would never hit be able to tell when the 2000th post came. So I’m just going to call this post the 2000th post and be done with it. In fact I think it is more likely the 2100th post but I don’t keep track of it anymore. Fittingly for a fake post I am not adding any photos to this, but there will be one later today.

Happy blogging everyone and my thanks to the WordPress Team for providing me this service for free (I am really not whining about the free account space maximums)!

But it’s super mottainai to delete your excellent posts. It’s like deleting work of art from the history of mankind. Isn’t there another way to preserve them without impoverishing yourself, such as finding sponsors, etc?

Thank you Junko. You are much too kind, this humble photoblog is far from art history! I think I could find sponsors but I am not a fan of advertising so I guess a gradual preening of this until now far too wild bush of blog posts will do well. Keep, the best posts, delete the rests. (^-^)

Hi Tokyobling! I agree with Junko, is there not a way to keep all your posts and upgrade your storage? I would be willing to contribute some $ to help keep you going. Your work is marvelous and should be preserved.

Thank you! You are very kind! It is not really a money problem, I could easily afford it, it is just my pride I guess. So I could never accept donations. (^-^;)

I agree. It is a shame to delete old posts. You can use Flickr for hosting your pics: 1TB of storage for free.

Thank you for the excellent advice! I have thought about it, but I think it is best to keep everything in one place. I will start some experiments though. If Flickr works fine I might start using it.

Congratulations! Add me to the list of those who wish the deletions didn’t have to happen, though I am sure you are being very meticulous about what gets discarded.

    • tokyobling said, on November 25, 2014 at 12:39 am

Thank you Amadl! You are very very kind! I will try to keep the good posts and get rid of the boring old posts that noone liked anyway. (^-^;) Even if I blog until 2030 I doubt there will come a day when I have 2000 Excellent top class posts online! (^-^;)

i thought for a horrible minute you were announcing you were giving up blogging. Please don’t – your snippets of Japan bring so much pleasure. LOVE the idea of a print sale…I’d snap some up!

    • tokyobling said, on November 25, 2014 at 12:41 am

Thank you Cathryn! I will keep blogging, but my blogging will get better now that I don’t have to worry so much about embarrassingly boring old posts! Print sales is something I have been thinking about, but there are three main issues: Printing costs, printing quality and shipping costs. I do not have the economy of scale that Amazon has! (^-^;)

You don’t want to fund raise to upgrade your account? I’ll be happy yo chip in, since it’s a pleasure to read it every morning.

Thank you for the kind words, you are one of my most loyal readers! Actually the soda posts brings in a lot of visitors to the blog, not sure of the quality in either the posts or the visitors though, so the soda writing will stay for a while longer at least! (^-^)

Please don’t delete too much! I am an avid (if sometimes slow to catch up) follower, and many of your posts give me so much inspiration. Keep on blogging, and here’s to the next 2000!
