Botan – Peony – at Tsurugaoka Hachimangu
If any flower would ever be able to give the Plum blossoms a run for the title of The Flower of February here in Japan, it would be the botan, the humble peony. Right now in any number of gardens, temples, palaces and flower shops around Japan the peony is in full bloom. I saw these beautiful flowers at the entrance of the annual botan exhibition in Kamakura’s Tsurugaoka Hachimangu.
Botan… Already? Wow!

Months–MONTHS!!– away from my earliest peony blooms. None of mine are botan (tree peony), just the more mundane herbaceous peony. My prize, though is a fern-leafed peony I’ve raised from a tiny seedling.

I admire people who can raise anything from seedlings…!

The queen of flowers! I replanted mine at a friend’s garden when I moved to K.

Peonys are one of my absolute favorite flowers…unfortunately, the climate in Germany allows them to flourish only in late April or May. I’m looking forward to this…
