Hatsudai Awaodori Festival 2015

Posted in Japanese Traditions, People, Places by tokyobling on September 24, 2015

This year’s two day Awaodori festival in Shibuya Ward’s Hatsudai was just as great as usual. Lots of great dancers and a splendid effort from all the organizers and volunteers who helped pull it all off. Here are just a few of the snapshots I took during the first day of the festival. I will have time to properly go through the image some day in the far future when I am retired!

In these photos you will find the Hatsudairen (初台連), the Hachamecharen (波奴連), the Otoriren (鳳連), the Gorakuren (伍楽連) and the Susonoren (すそ野連).

Nice photos, as always! I made it there on Wednesday, for what may well be my last awa fix if the year. What I like about the Hatsudai awaodori is that despite its compact size/route, it always seems to have a relaxed atmosphere – maybe everyone has that end-of-season feeling!

Thank you! There are still a few events for the year, but this was the last of the main season. I think you are right that this festival feels very relaxed, possibly because it is a very very local festival, about half of the teams performing each day are local teams, and I guess most of their families and friends show up to enjoy it. Despite being so close to Shinjuku a lot of Hatsudai is old residential streets, so quite a few people live and work here.
