Rose Of Versaille Window Shopping – Isetan

Posted in Places, Shops by tokyobling on February 25, 2015

I took these photos of the Rose of Versaille themed window decoration at Isetan department store in Shinjuku a couple of months ago. I meant to post this straight away but the photos got stuck in editing limbo for the longest time. Excuse me! Still, fans of the game-changing Rose of Versaille manga series from the 70s will get a kick out of seeing these – each window is decorated to the theme of one of the characters in the famous shojo (girl’s) manga about a girl who is raised as a son and takes up the post as captain of the guard in Paris just before the revolution. It is quite possibly the story that kick started a generation of female manga readers in the 1970s and as such the whole genre is indebted to this fantastic comic book series. Those who are not fans of the manga can still enjoy this masterclass in window decoration!

Ginza Window Decoration – Window Shopping

Posted in Places, Shops by tokyobling on May 28, 2014

Walking around in Ginza one late afternoon I spotted this funny looking window decoration, mannequins ensnared by a chameleon! This particular street crossing is one of the most interesting for window shoppers or professional decorators everywhere, never have I seen so many and such elaborate or expensive decorations in one spot. Any designer, decorator, shop manager or merchandiser would do well to take monthly walks along this street. For more examples of window decorations in Tokyo, just use the tags at the end of the post!

Kyotaro x Isetan – Shop Window Decoration

Posted in Places, Shops by tokyobling on July 17, 2013

Isetan is the name of a large department store chain here in Japan, who happens to have an excellent sense in illustrators. A few times a year the store runs a major shop window decoration campaign relying heavily on the art of a relatively young illustrator. The other day as I was passing by I saw these windows using artwork of the fantastic Kyotaro, an illustrator with an impressive and varied resume (make sure to visit the gallery on this site). It’s not easy to take decent photos of shop windows, but it was a swelteringly hot overcast day so I think I did a reasonable amount trying to keep the glare out of the photos. If you pass Shinjuku make sure to walk past Isetan!

Genius Show Window – Hermès

Posted in Places, Shops, Stuff by tokyobling on December 14, 2009

The other day in Ginza I walked past the Hermès main building and saw this amazingly simple window decoration for their line of scarves. When the woman blows, the scarf billows extremely graciously. I don’t know who designed this window decoration or who the model is but I can count on one hand the times I have seen a shop window as simply beautiful as this. I think I’m in love. To me, this is the epitome of luxury and try as they might, I don’t think any major fashion brand can top this for sheer beauty in this christmas season. Pure genius.

Sorry for the poor images, it was pouring rain outside (see last image), I was on my way to a meeting (running late of course) and the glare…! The glare! D700/20mm prime. I do miss the video on my D90 when I’m out with the D700.
