Kamikochi National Park

Posted in Nature, Places by tokyobling on July 10, 2010

A couple of months ago I mentioned on the blog how I had visited Kamikochi National Park in Nagano Prefecture, north of Tokyo. Here are some photos from this trip, more specifically some of the wildlife I met walking around Taishoike, the lower parts of the river that is the centre of the national park. Due to it’s high elevation, it remains pretty cool even in the summer and nights tend to get chilly, as I discovered trying to sleep rough on the way up there to save on hotel money. As with all Japanese national parks, it is not the most tiring of hikes, easily enjoyed even for the elderly and children. I guess the Japanese perception of nature plays in here: no matter how much we wish to preserve nature, there’s a few vending machines even here! Still, for a long weekend out of Tokyo, it is hard to beat in terms of sheer beauty! Entrance is free but the ride there can get very expensive.

And aren’t you the guy who says he CAN’T take good nature pictures? At least in the past I seem to recall you saying that…

These are great and compelling images! Very well done…

Thanks! I’m a mediocre photographer but I do think about how I shoot, with nature photography I’m clueless, I just point and click. I really need to study more about it, but I have never had the fortune to be around great nature photographers and when I started shooting in high school… well, let’s just say that there are other more compelling subjects…! haha…

I visited Kamiikochi years ago. There I saw beautiful postcards of the spectacular mountain peaks. Unfortunately, it was cloudy the entire weekend, so those were the only views of the mountains available to me. Looks like your were more fortunate. Nice photos. Love the animal shots.

Pon-chyan, thanks for kind comments! Yes, I was incredibly lucky with the weather. For some reason I have had good weather on all my trips this year. Last year it started raining pretty much the same instant I opened up my front door…
