Higashi Ikebukuro Festival

Posted in Japanese Traditions, People, Places by tokyobling on September 23, 2010

The summer is far from over and we still reach temperatures of over 30 degrees in central Tokyo. Which is great for the summer festivals still taking place almost daily around the city. The other day I literally stumbled upon this hidden little gem of a festival on the back streets of eastern Ikebukuro, just a few improvised stands, a central table with a huge taiko drum and a few bonodori dancers. The highlight of the day was watching the little girl get permission from her parents to go fishing for balls at a little street side game: she got a handful! While watching and shooting all of this together with a couple of friends we were almost jumped by a very eager little old lady armed with large paper mugs full of pop corn for all of us, free! I really love Tokyo.

I think, especially in terms of western-eastern friendship and cultural understanding, that a fun, cultural photo blog run by a woman in a middle eastern metropolis would be both important and far more popular than this blog. Just be careful! Blogging is much more complicated in Egypt than in Japan.
