Enoshima – Higashihama Sunset
Some of the best beaches around Tokyo are to be found near Enoshima to the south west of Tokyo. Considering that they are within an hour on the train from the biggest city in the world they are remarkably clean. There are two beaches near the island, the Nishihama and the Higashihama. In the 1964 the beach was used a venue for the yachting and visiting the beach became very popular. These days about a million people a year visit the beach.
I wasn’t the only one enjoying the spectacular sunset by taking a few photos, even one of the surfers had his camera out!
Were you just there? It’s got to be awfully cold? It appears you were there at the beginning or so of the golden hour? You have some nice photos and an accompanying short story. I didn’t know any of this before. Not to steer folks away from your good story but my parents apparently did go to Enoshima several times when I was a toddler. This one was marked April 1957. I don’t know if any of the landmarks visible are still there but unlikely. http://www.flickr.com/photos/p47koji/6146129962/

I go there quite often, but I think this photo was taken on my trip there December first. It was not too cold 15 degrees celsius (about 60 F), but the wind was a little fierce. You have some great photos! I never tire of looking of photos of Tokyo from the 20th century, especially post war photos. I found a photo of Enoshima beach in July 1960, just three years after yours. The difference in the number of people, and the landmarks I can see in your photo makes me wonder if you were really at Enoshima? I know that the beach has changed a lot since then (for example the Google maps online today are absolutely wrong on so many points regarding the beach area and the waterline at any tide level). It looks more like Yuigahama, but even then I can’t really find the temple or the tower I can see in the background. If they were around in 1957 they would most likely still be around today. Maybe someone more familiar with Enoshima in the 1950s reading this might know?

It would be interesting to find out… My mother had written on the photo album she kept that this was at Enoshima. There were like three others…one with my dad’s ’57 Ford.

I can hear the silence with only the sound of waves breaking it * – *

How poetic! I think I was mostly thinking about the cold winds when I took these photos! (^-^;)
