Mizonokuchi Station – Kawasaki City
There is a saying that in Tokyo you can eat out every meal for your entire life and never have to eat at the same restaurant twice. While this is certainly true, I feel that a variation on this saying could be: In the Tokyo region you could travel to a new station everyday of your life. This though, is certainly an exaggeration even it feels like it sometimes! Despite having spent years and years in and around Tokyo I still travel to stations every now and then that are completely new to me. The Mizonokuchi Station in northern Kawasaki City of neighboring Kanagawa Prefecture is one of those major stations that I had just never had a reason to visit. It is used by on average over 140 000 people per day, much more than the population of most cities in Europe. Mizonokuchi Station (溝の口駅) was inaugurated in 1927 and serves Tokyu Den-en-toshi Line and Tokyu Oimachi Line. It is also popular as it is just a stone’s throw from the JR Musashi-Mizonokuchi Station (武蔵溝ノ口駅). You can see that JR has kept the old “spelling” of the station name.
I still haven’t had time to explore the station or the area around it, but maybe some day! Until then, I’ll file this under “places to check out”. If you have any personal stories or information about the station or the area around it please let me know!
This is just a couple of stations away from me and you should definitely go back again to visit the old style, standing bars which are located just by the station, on a path which runs alongside the JR Nambu line. Your conversation may get drowned out by passing trains (thankfully slow-moving, as they pull in or out of the station) but it feels very old school and the bars are always crowded! Highly recommended 🙂

Wow, I had no idea. This is what I like most about blogging – getting tips from readers! I will definitely check it out the next time I visit, even if it might be a long time from now! (^-^)

Waaaaa! This is a station I frequented in my childhood as I lived only two stations away from here on Nanbu Line (Kuji 久地.) It used to have a super local flavor and there wasn’t even a covered walkway between the JR station and the other ones. I went to Mizonokuchi 2 years ago to see my childhood friend who still lives in Kuji. I was amazed at the transformation and the mob of tall buildings. There aren’t many spectacular stuff to see in the area though.

Wow, it is a small world isn’t it? Yes, the covered walkway is “new” (well, new in our eyes). I have to imagine being a younger version of Junko as I visit the next time!

140,000 people a day! Where are they in the photos? Amazing thorough fare. I wonder where they are going or coming from? What advice do you have for tourists who come to go through this amazing part of the city?

Haha… good thinking! I was there very early in the morning on a weekend, so the crowds had not started pouring in yet! (^-^;) I have no advice yet – I know next to nothing about Kawasaki City!

what i really like about japanese train stations is that not only they all clean, but at every station you bound to find great japanese food vendors. especially when one travels far, they tend to have a certain food products only available at that region or area, and sometimes, only at that specific train station.
