More Awaodori Men

Posted in Japanese Traditions, People, Places by tokyobling on September 13, 2012

A couple of weeks ago I posted a few snapshots of some very handsome men taken at the Minamikoshigaya Awaodori festival at the end of last month. Here are a few more very good looking guys from the Fujionren, Kioiren, Soka-Oyamaren and finally the world famous Ahoren from Tokushima prefecture. Are they not fantastic looking?

    Glad you got to see Ahōren. I’d say they’re just about the most famous Awa team in the history of ever. A good proportion of chōchin swinging teams base their dance off of these guys (Kusunokiren, for example). And they take it very seriously. According to an NHK documentary, they get a huge influx of new members at the end of each summer, and only a fraction of them are still there by the following summer. ^^;

    The climax of their road routine always reminds me of the opening sequence in Princess Mononoke for some reason…

      Got to love Ahoren! The Gods of Awa! I would love to see that documentary, if you have it on tape? Never seen their routine, I was at the fast track as usual (make sour face….).

        I think still have it on my HDD recorder (I tend not to delete this stuff), but you’d have to come round to see it.

    I think E would go for #2. That third fellow, though, when he smiles he really smiles!

      Hm… I’m triangulating E’s tastes for when I get her over here! (^-^) Yes, the third guy had more charisma in his little finger than I have in my entire body I think…! Fantastic look and fantastic presence!
